Mr. Nelson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has any plans to review the forensic pathology service in England and Wales.

Mr. Brittan

I have decided to set up a working party under the chairmanship of Mr. G. J. Wasserman, assistant under-secretary of state, with the following terms of reference:

To review the arrangements for providing a forensic pathology service in England and Wales with particular reference to:

  1. (i) organisation and funding
  2. (ii) appointment and conditions of service
  3. (iii) training and quality assurance

and to make recommendations.

The membership of the working party will be as follows:

  • Professor D. Bowen and Professor A. Usher; British Association in Forensic Medicine
  • Dr. M. A. Green; British Medical Association
  • Dr. J. D. K. Burton; Coroners Society
  • Mr. P. M. Imbert, Chief Constable of Thames Valley; Association of Chief Police Officers
  • Mr. B. Worth, Deputy Assistant Commissioner; Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis
  • Mr. J. Walker;Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions
  • Miss M. Pereira; Controller, Forensic Science Service, Home Office
  • Mr. D. J. Belfall and Mr. N. M. Johnson; Home Office
