asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many new staff have been employed by his Department in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

[pursuant to his reply, 12 July 1984]: In respect of the Northern Ireland Civil Service, central recruitment records are confined to staff recruited by the Northern Ireland Civil Service Commission and therefore exclude appointments to the industrial grade and to part-time non-pensionable posts. The numbers so recruited to the Northern Ireland Civil Service during the last five years were as follows:
