asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement about the level of and cost of servicing the national debt over the last five years.

Mr. Ian Stewart

The level of the national debt fell between 1978–79 and 1983–84 both in real terms and as a proportion of GDP.

The cost of servicing the debt was virtually unchanged over the same period, as a proportion of GDP.
