HL Deb 12 July 1984 vol 454 cc1167-70WA
Lord Stallard

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give figures detailing the children currently resident in long-stay abnormality hospitals by:

  1. (i) age of children;
  2. (ii) district health authority;
  3. (iii) local authority social services department; and
  4. (iv) length of time of residency.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health and Social Security (Lord Glenarthur)

Information is not available in the form requested. Information on the numbers of children resident in mental handicap hospitals and units at 31st December 1982, the latest available date, is given in Table 1 below. The figures include children who are not normally resident but are receiving short periods of assessment or care, and also children in NHS community-based provision. Information on the local authority areas from which these children came is not readily available centrally. The length of time in hospital is not collected centrally, but estimates are given in Table 2. Mental handicap hospitals and units are not classified by the length of time patients stay, so the tables cover all such hospitals and units.
