HC Deb 11 July 1984 vol 63 c550W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications were made to enter the United Kingdom or to remain in the country as a refugee in 1983; and how many applicants were (a) recognised as refugees, (b) granted asylum without refugee status and (c) refused.

Mr. Waddington

Three thousand, five hundred and sixty-eight, 1,018; 389; and 1,939 respectively.

The figures for cases decided do not relate directly to that for applications, as an application is not necessarily decided in the year it is made. Some of those whose applications were refused will have qualified to remain in this country on other grounds.
