HC Deb 10 July 1984 vol 63 cc531-2W
Sir Peter Emery

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the level of expenditure within the National Health Service for hip replacement operations during each of the last five years; and what consideration was given to those areas with a high proportion of retired people.

Mr. John Patten

Information on expenditure on hip replacement operations in the NHS is not available on the basis requested.

As recommended by the Resource Allocation Working Party, allocations to regional health authorities are based on regions' populations weighted to take account of the use made by people of different age-groups and sexes as well as of geographical variations in morbidity as indicated by standardised mortality ratios.
