§ Mr. John Fraserasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish in the Official Report the number of neighbourhood watch schemes now operating in the area of the Metropolitan police and give details of how many such schemes (a) operate in each London borough, (b) have the recommended participation level of households of 40 per cent. and (c) how many neighbourhood watch schemes are planned or are at pre-meeting or meeting stages of preparation.
§ Mr. HurdI understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that, at the end of April, the latest date for which collated information is available, there were 390 neighbourhood watch schemes operating within the Metropolitan police district. The number in each London borough and in other areas within the Metropolitan police district is shown as follows. At the end of April, a further 509 schemes were being planned. Information about the levels of participation in functioning schemes could not be obtained without disproportionate cost and would no doubt360W fluctuate over time. The commissioner's full list of the functioning schemes has been placed in the Library of the House.
