§ Mr. Lathamasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action he took following the display of controversial political banners, without the benefit of planning permission and despite prior requests and warnings by his Department, by the Iranian embassy on the day described by Iran as A1-Quds day in 1983; and whether any diplomats were asked to leave the United Kingdom as a result of this incident.
§ Mr. LuceI refer my hon. Friend to my replies to his questions of 25 May and 20 June. The Iranian embassy removed the controversial political material at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The offence was not sufficiently serious to warrant the expulsion of diplomats. We made it clear to the Iranians, however, that they must abide by accepted standards of diplomatic behaviour.
