Whether the export of military equipment to Indonesia has been licensed and, if so, what weapons; whether a licence has been granted for the export of refitments to ex-Royal Navy frigates at the price of £20 million; and whether licences will be withdrawn and refused in view of Indonesia's repression in East Timor and its record in denying human rights.
§ The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Armed Forces (Lord Trefgarne)All applications for sales of defence and defence related equipment to 749WA Indonesia, as with any other country, are considered on a case by case basis taking all relevant factors into account. In particular, we would not approve the supply of equipment thought likely, in our judgment, to be used for purposes of internal repression or to violate human rights. It has been the consistent policy of this, and previous administrations not to reveal details of defence sales business with other countries.
