Sir John Farr

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the number of fatal accidents among those engaged in agriculture in each of the last three years; and what was the number of farm safety inspectors employed in each of the years in question.

The number of fatal accidents among those engaged in agriculture in each of the last three years was as follows:

1983 58

These figures exclude child fatalities.

The number of inspectors employed by the Health and Safety Executive's Agricultural Inspectorate in each of the years in question was as follows:

The figures in brackets represent the number of agricultural inspectors deployed on headquarters duties and are included in the totals. The Health and Safety Executive is currently recruiting up to 10 new agricultural inspectors.
