Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many of the employees of his Department are registered as disabled.

Mr. Ridley

Currently the Department employs 160 registered disabled people; 157 are non-industrial staff and the other three are industrial.

asked the Secretary of State for Transport how many new staff have been employed by his Department in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

During this period the total number of staff employed by the Department (adjusted for machinery of Government transfers) fell from 16,123 to 14,151, a reduction of more than 12 per cent.
