asked the Secretary of State for Transport what factors he takes into account when setting the public services obligation grant of the British Railways Board.

Mr. David Mitchell

The main factors taken into account in determining the public service obligation grant in 1984 were BR's own claim, its corporate plan, the terms of the PSO direction, and the objectives we gave the chairman last October. On this basis, we accepted the grant claim for £837 million submitted by the board.
