HC Deb 04 July 1984 vol 63 cc201-2W
Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the proposed terms of reference for his review of guidance to local authorities on day care for young children; when it will begin; and who will carry it out.

Mr. John Patten

The Department will begin in the autumn a review of its long-standing advice to local authorities on provision for children under five with a view to consultation with interested bodies and the possible issue of revised guidance next year.

Ms. Harman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the reasons for the visit by a group of his officials to the United States of America to look at day care for young children.

Mr. John Patten

As part of the Department's continuing oversight of developments in provision for under-fives in this country two officials are spending two weeks in the United States visiting selected schemes for the day care of children under five.
