HC Deb 04 July 1984 vol 63 cc168-9W
Mr. Soley

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether women prisoners who are (a) up to six months' pregnant and (b) six to nine months' pregnant are required to undergo strip searches; and what facilities are available to monitor the emotional effects of a strip search on the prisoner.

Mr. Ancram

Pregnant women are required to undergo strip searches where this is necessary for female prisoners as part of normal admission, discharge or court attendance procedures; on transfer to a segregation unit; during routine cell and special searches; and following "open" visits. Normal medical supervision of prisoners covers all medical needs, including any emotional effects of such searches.
