Mr. Pendry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will supply for each year since 1971, the number of men and women employed part-time in Great Britain, broken down by industry.

Mr. Alan Clark

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.

Mr. Baldry

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will provide a table showing for 30 June, by age and sex, the number of people unemployed in the Banbury and Oxford travel-to-work areas by post code sector.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information requested is not available except at disproportionate cost.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total of young people who have become unemployed and who have registered at unemployment benefit offices in each travel-to-work area in Cumbria in the last month for which statistics are available.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives, for the areas specified, the number of claimants aged under 18 years who became unemployed counts taken on 5 April and 10 May 1984.

Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total number of persons unemployed, percentage rate of unemployment, and the total number of vacancies for (a) the Workington travel-to work area and (b) Cumbria at the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. Alan Clark

On 10 May, the total number of unemployed claimants in the Workington travel-to-work area was 4,993 and the unemployment rate was 16.1 per cent. The corresponding figures for Cumbria were 20,362 and 10.5 per cent.

On 4 May, the numbers of notified vacancies remaining unfilled at jobcentres and careers offices in the Workington travel-to-work area were 165 and 3, respectively. The corresponding figures for Cumbria were 1,656 at jobcentres and 66 at careers offices. Vacancies notified at jobcentres are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication, the figures for jobcentres and careers offices should not be added together. The number of vacancies remaining unfilled at a particular date takes no account of the flow of vacancies being notified, filled or withdrawn which would reflect activity more closely. For example, during the 12-month period to March 1984, the number of people placed in jobs by jobcentres in Cumbria was 15,739. It is estimated that, nationally, the public employment service accounts for about one in four of all placings.
