HC Deb 04 July 1984 vol 63 c208W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what information he has about the number of dialysis units now operating in the private health sector; what powers he possesses to ensure the clinical standards are acceptable; if patients so dialysed remain within the responsibility of a National Health Service consultant; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We do not collect information centrally on a number of private sector dialysis units, but these may only be provided in registered hospitals or nursing homes whose continuing registration is dependent upon satisfactory standards being maintained. Doctors who are responsible for the care of private patients in the private sector do not necessarily hold National Health Service consultant posts. It is open to health authorities to contract with private organisations for the provision of dialysis for National Health Service patients. Such a contract could provide for patients to remain under the care of NHS consultants. If not, it would be the health authority's responsibility to satisfy itself that the doctors providing the treatment were equally well qualified. I welcome such co-operation between the NHS and the private sector where the health authority concerned is satisfied with the quality and cost-effectiveness of the treatment provided.
