Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many men and women, respectively, in the Walthamstow and Leyton area have not had a job since leaving school.

The following is the available information for unemployed claimants on 10 May in the Walthamstow jobcentre area, which includes Leyton. The figures relate to the numbers of unemployed school leavers, that is young people who had not entered employment since terminating full-time education.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what were the average levels of unemployment for each year from 1974 to the present time.

The annual averages for the years 1978 to 1983 were published in the labour market data section—tables 2.1 and 2.2—of the June 1984 issue ofEmployment Gazette; figures for the earlier years were published in the December 1982 issue. Copies of the Gazette are in the Library.

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied that the monthly unemployment figures issued from his South Shields office accurately reflect the number of people out of work in the borough.

Figures currently available relate to unemployed claimants in the South Shields jobcentre area. From later this year, figures will be produced for claimants in the South Tyneside district council and South Shields parliamentary constituency areas.

On 5 April 1984, the latest date for which the information is available, there were 2,538 male and 848 female claimants in the South Shields jobcentre area who had been unemployed for over 52 weeks.
