HC Deb 02 July 1984 vol 63 c5W
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

asked the Prime Minister what are the numbers of those employed in the public and in the private sector, respectively, in (a) the shipbuilding industry, (b) the steel industry, (c) the mining industry, including those currently on strike, (d) financial services, (e) electronics, (f) oil related activities, (g) the motor industry and (h) the aerospace industry in Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales, giving figures in each case for each of the last 10 available years.

The Prime Minister

Estimates of the numbers employed in the public and private sectors in the United Kingdom by broad industry group are published for the years 1977 to 1983 in an article in the March 1984 issue of "Economic Trends". However, consistent figures by country and in the industry detail requested are not available.
