Mr. Wilkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will publish the new quotas for imports of clothing from China.

The EC Council on 29 June approved a regulation establishing the following quotas for the United Kingdom:

1 Cotton yarn 80 tonnes
2* Cotton fabric 4,208 tonnes
of which Other woven fabrics of cotton, other not more than
than unbleached or bleached 421 tonnes
3 Synthetic fabrics 107 tonnes
of which Woven fabrics of synthetic textile not more than
fibres, other than unbleached or bleached 11 tonnes
4 T-shirts 808,000 pieces
5† Jerseys 1,433,000 pieces
6‡ Trousers 368,000 pieces
7 Blouses 185,000 pieces
8 Shirts 1,050,000 pieces
9 Terry fabrics 544 tonnes
10 Knitted or crocheted gloves 1,300,000 pairs
of which Knitted gloves, mittens and mitts not more than
(coated or impregnated) 200,000 pairs
12 Knitted socks and stockings 1,267,000 pairs
16 Men's and boys' suits 120,000 pieces
17 Men's and boys' woven jackets 80,000 pieces
18 Men's and boys' woven undergarments other than shirts 103 tonnes
19 Handkerchiefs 7,478,000 pieces
20+39 Bed linen 476 tonnes
21 Parkas and anoraks 388,000 pieces

* For heading 5,509, fabrics of less than 115 cm wide, there is an additional quota of 234 tonnes, and for certain fabrics of medical gauze there is an additional quota of 255 tonnes.
† Includes a sub-limit of 11,000 pieces for jerseys and pullovers of wool or of fine animal hair.
‡ For certain shorts of heading 6,101 there is an additional quota of 100,000 pieces.
║ Quotas replace previous Community surveillance licensing on categories 23, 24 (men's and boys' pyjamas) and 76.
