HC Deb 30 January 1984 vol 53 c10W
Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will introduce charges for foreign commercial vehicles arriving in the United Kingdom to use British roads.

Mrs. Chalker

No. This would be contrary to the Rome treaty, which points firmly against any such discriminatory action.

Mr. Soames

asked the Secretary of State for Transport in how many member countries of the European Economic Community British commercial vehicles have to pay road tolls.

Mrs. Chalker

France, Greece and Italy apply tolls to all commercial vehicles using motorways. There are specific road bridge and road tunnel tolls in many EC member states, including the United Kingdom.
