HC Deb 30 January 1984 vol 53 cc33-4W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many animals die each day in weapons research establishments, by species.

Mr. Lee

Records of experiments involving animals are maintained in a form suitable to meet the requirement that the number of such experiments should be reported to the Home Department annually. In 1983, about 10,000 animal experiments were conducted in Ministry of Defence research and development establishments. The species involved were mainly rats, mice and guinea pigs, some rabbits, monkeys, pigs and other animals were also used.
