HL Deb 30 January 1984 vol 447 cc543-4WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why notices referring to the Factories Acts are displayed in prison department establishment workshops, if those Acts do not apply in prisons, and why the governor of a prison informed an inmate that an exemption had been obtained to Section 61(5) of the Act, which requires a notice to be displayed stating who is in charge of the first-aid box.

Lord Elton

Although the Factories Act does not apply to prison establishment workshops, it has always been our policy to regard its provisions as the standard to be applied within such workshops and accordingly abstracts from the Act are posted for the guidance of staff and inmates. If the noble Lord will provide details of the particular case he has in mind we will make further inquiries.
