HC Deb 30 January 1984 vol 53 cc48-9W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what public investment has been lost with the collapse of Lewis Stokfisk Ltd; what machinery was bought with Government financial assistance; and what was their date of manufacture and the value against which grant was paid.

Mr. John MacKay

Information concerning the losses incurred by the Highlands and Islands development board is contained in the board's annual accounts for 1981–82, copies of which are in the Library of the House, In addition, the board made ex-gratia payments of approximately £140,000 to the ordinary creditors of Lewis Stokfisk Ltd.

I understand that losses incurred by the Department of Trade and Industry in respect of regional development grants provided to the company amounted to £13,475.

The board has informed me that the total value of plant, machinery and moveables purchased by the company was approximately £645,000 and that virtually all the machinery installed by Lewis Stokfisk Ltd was new at the time it was acquired by the company. Government assistance to the company was not related specifically to machinery.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he is satisfied that the public interest has been adequately protected in the sale of the assets of Lewis Stokfisk Ltd., to Mr. Per Stoknes.

Mr. John MacKay

I understand that Mr. Stoknes's offer for the assets put on sale by the receiver of Lewis Stokfisk Ltd was the best submitted.
