HC Deb 30 January 1984 vol 53 c35W
Mr. Kaufman

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he is satisfied that there is sufficient protection under copyright legislation to authors and publishers of computer programmes and general computer software.

Mr. Alexander Flecher

Although the question has not been decided in the courts, it is widely accepted the copyright protection extends under present law to computer programmes and other software. Nevertheless, to remove any doubt, the Government stated their intention in the copyright Green Paper (Cmnd. 8302) published in 1981 to make it explicit in new legislation that computer programmes attract copyright protection.
