HC Deb 30 January 1984 vol 53 cc3-4W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what discussions he has had with the Netherlands and Germany at URENCO in Almelo, about uranium enrichment technology provision to Argentina; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Giles Shaw

No such discussions have taken place. There is no intention to provide uranium enrichment technology to Argentina.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if, in the light of the purchase of 143 tonnes of heavy water from West Germany by CNEA, he is satisfied that assistance given by the International Atomic Energy Authority members to Argentina is not being misused.

Mr. Luce

I have been asked to reply.

Assistance offered by International Atomic Energy Agency members which are non-proliferation treaty parties or members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group is given only on receipt of certain non-proliferation assurances. These include the acceptance of safeguards administered by the agency that are designed to ensure that material or equipment supplied for peaceful purposes is not diverted to military use.
