HC Deb 30 January 1984 vol 53 cc30-1W
Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many and what percentage of fatal accidents and of non-fatal accidents, respectively, were attributed to maintenance work, during each of the last five years for which records are available.

Mr. Gummer

[pursuant to his reply, 27 January 1984, c. 717]: The number and percentage of fatal accidents atributed to maintenance work for 1978 to 1982 is shown in the table. For non-fatal accidents reported to Her Majesty's factory inspectorate only, a special study in 1980 showed that out of 206,066, approximately 13 per cent. could be attributed to maintenance and some other related activities.

Figures for other years are not readily available.

Fatal accidents reported to HSC/E enforcing authorities attributed to maintenance work.*
Year Number As a percentage of all fatal accidents
1982 131 23
1981 104 19
1980† 132 25
1979‡ 143 24
1978‡ 147 23
* Excludes Local Authorities for which a similar breakdown is not available.
† Before 1981, fatalities to the self-employed and non-employees were reported on a voluntary basis only. They are therefore not comparable with figures for 1981 and 1982 which are based on reports resulting from a specific requirement under the Notification of Accidents and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (1980).
‡ Information for 1979 and 1978 excludes fatal accidents attributed to maintenance work reported to the Mines and Quarries Inspectorate.
