HC Deb 26 January 1984 vol 52 cc700-1W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations from the general public and the medical profession he has received regarding surrogate motherhood schemes; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

In the last two years I have received 55 letters from members of the general public but no representations from the medical profession. As my hon. Friend will know, the Warnock inquiry into human fertilisation and embryology is examining the social, legal and ethical implications of surrogacy, and I understand it has received evidence on the subject from a wide range of organisations, including interested medical bodies.
