HC Deb 26 January 1984 vol 52 cc655-60W
Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many job vacancies were advertised in the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area in the latest month for which figures are available; and how this compares with the same month in the previous year.

Mr. Alan Clark

On 2 December 1983 the numbers of notified vacancies remaining unfilled at jobcentres and careers offices in the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area were 696 and 16, respectively. The corresponding numbers on 3 December 1982 were 465 at jobcentres and nine at careers offices.

Vacancies notified to jobcentres are estimated to be about one third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication the figures for jobcentres and careers offices should not be added together. The number of vacancies unfilled at a particular date takes no account of the flow of vacancies being notified, filled or withdrawn which would reflect activity more closely. For example, during the 12-month period to December 1983 the number of people placed in jobs by jobcentres in the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work areas was 11,093. It is estimated that the public employment service accounts for about one in four of all placings in the country as a whole.

Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many persons (a) male and (b) female were placed in employment by the jobcentres in the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area in the latest month for which statistics are available.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The numbers of people placed in employment by jobcentres in the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area during the five week period ending 6 January 1984 (the latest for which statistics are available) are as follows:

Jobcentre Placings
Biddulph 40
Burslem 89
Cheadle 24
Hanley 122
Kidsgrove 70
Longton 109
Newcastle-under-Lyme 181
Stoke-on-Trent 60

Separate figures for males and females are not available. There is likely to have been a substantial number of people who found jobs in these areas other than through the jobcentres. Nationally it is estimated that about a quarter of all engagements are made through jobcentres.

Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many jobs in the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area were being supported by the temporary short-time working scheme during the last month for which statistics are available.

Mr. Alan Clark

There were no potentially redundant jobs being supported under the temporary short-time working compensation scheme in November 1983 in the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area.

Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what proportion of (a) unemployed males and (b) unemployed females in the Stoke-on-Trent travel-to-work area have been out of work for (a) up to six months, (b) six to 12 months, (c) 12 to 18 months, (d) 18 months to two years and (e) over two years at the latest available date.

Mr. Alan Clark
