HC Deb 26 January 1984 vol 52 c627W
Mr. Wheeler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will consider the implications of the Maze report for prison security in England and Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brittan

Many of the recommendations in the report by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons on the escape from the Maze prison relate to the particular circumstances of Northern Ireland; but others are of general application and have implications for prisons in England and Wales. I am arranging for copies of the report to be sent to the governors of all our closed establishments and for instructions to be issued drawing their attention to the recommendations that require immediate action on their part. I am also arranging for our policy on prison security to be reviewed urgently in the light of the report's recommendations.
