HC Deb 26 January 1984 vol 52 cc675-6W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give estimated dates when each of the regions and districts in Scotland will achieve a target of treating 45 to 50 per million of the population suffering from kidney diseases; if he will indicate the progressions to be expected for 1984, 1985 and 1986; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John MacKay

The number of patients being treated for kidney disease already exceeds a rate of 50 per million of the population in all parts of Scotland. I expect this level of treatment to be maintained, if not increased, in future.

Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will indicate the average length of waiting time for treatment for kidney patients in Scotland; if he will give his best estimates of patients who die whilst on the waiting lists; if he will give the age distribution of such deaths; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John MacKay

I am not aware that any patient in Scotland considered likely to benefit by it has had to wait for renal dialysis. The average waiting time for patients in Scotland who received transplanted kidneys during 1983 was 435 days. The number of patients in Scotland with renal failure who died during 1983 while awaiting a kidney transplant was as follows:

Age Number
Under 11 years 1
11–20 years 1
21–30 years 2
31–40 years 4
41–50 years 2
51–60 years 3
Over 60 years 1
