HC Deb 26 January 1984 vol 52 cc699-700W
Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the powers he exercises, and functions he can carry out, without any specific parliamentary approval.

Mr. Fowler

A large number of provisions in a wide range of statutes require or empower me to take certain action or decisions, with or without the specific approval of Parliament in the particular case. In addition, because of my responsibilities for war pensions, I sometimes carry out functions in connection with the exercise of the Royal Prerogative in relation to the armed forces of the Crown. Other powers and functions are inherent in the office of a Minister of the Crown: for example the day-to-day management of my Department.
