HC Deb 26 January 1984 vol 52 c682W
Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether any Foreign Office or diplomatic offical had any discussions with Mr. Denktash when he was in the United Kingdom on 20–21 January; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitney

There were no such official contacts with Mr. Denktash during his transit through London on 20–21 January.

Mr. Chris Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Government of Turkey in respect of proposals made recently by President Kyprianou of Cyprus for the future administration of the island; and whether he has recommended these proposals as forming a basis for discussion between the Greek and Turkish communities in Cyprus.

Mr. Whitney

We welcome the fact that President Kyprianou has put forward these detailed proposals to the United Nations Secretary-General and hope that they will lead to early progress towards a peaceful, just and lasting settlement to the Cyprus problem. We are in contact with all parties who have an interest in the problem.
