HC Deb 24 January 1984 vol 52 c469W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the loss to the Exchequer during 1982–83 of value added tax evasion; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hayhoe

Customs and Excise has estimated that some £250 million to £500 million a year is currently being lost through undetected underdeclarations of VAT. Efforts to combat evasion are continually being made and in 1984–85 an additional 150 staff are to be employed on control duties.
