asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is his policy towards mid-life modernisation of Her Majesty's ships.

Our policy remains as announced in Cmnd. 8288, in which we published the results of our 1981 review of the defence programme. The practice of giving HM ships extended mid-life modernisations has been discontinued.
