HC Deb 24 January 1984 vol 52 c472W
Mr. Malins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many extra prison places have been provided in England and Wales since June 1979.

Mr. Hurd

About 2,000 new inmate places have been provided through the prison building programme since June 1979. Temporary losses of existing accommodation for refurbishment and redevelopment mean that the net addition to available places has been slightly less than half this number. In the course of 1984 we expect to provide about 1,000 further new places.

Mr. Malins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many new prisons have been built in England and Wales since June 1979; and where they are.

Mr. Hurd

One completely new prison has been opened since June 1979 — Her Majesty's prison, Frankland, Brasside, Durham. Substantial additions have also been made to existing establishments such as those at Her Majesty's Prison, Highpoint, Stradishall, Suffolk, and Her Majesty's youth custody centre, Hollesley bay, Woodbridge, Suffolk, opened in 1982 and 1983 respectively. In 1984 we expect to open a second new prison, at Wayland, near Griston in Norfolk, together with further additional accommodation at a number of existing establishments.
