§ Mr. Forthasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the number of cases of applications for restoration to the Register of Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors for the period since 1 July 1983 and in the year to 1 July 1983, with details of the number approved and the number refused.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeI am informed by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting that of 15 applications for restoration to the register for nurses, midwives and health visitors from 1 July to 31 December 1983, 12 were accepted and three rejected. Comparable figures for the year ended 30 June 1983 are not readily available because of changes in the statutory bodies, but the figures for nurses were 36, 29 and seven. The figures relate to England and Wales as those for England only are also not readily available.
§ Mr. Forthasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied with the operation of Statutory Instrument No. 887 (1983) on Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors (Professional Conduct) Rules with regard to the composition of conduct committees and the acceptability under rule 17 (Evidence) of any uncorroborated statement or allegations.

Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting which made the rules has received no objections to the make-up of these committees since its inception on 1 July 1983.
The acceptability of evidence under rule 17 would be a matter for the legal assessor who, under the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (Legal Assessors) Order 1983 SI No. 839, is required to be present at all hearings and to advise on any questions of law arising.
