§ Dr. BoysonUnder the Supplementary Benefit (Single Payment) Regulations, supplementary pensioners are entitled to single payments for the purchase of space heating appliances if they need such an item but do not either possess it or have a suitable alternative item available and if they do not have sufficient savings in excess of £500 to purchase the item themselves. It is for the independent adjudicating authorities to decide, in the circumstances of a particular case, whether these conditions are satisfied and, if so, whether a particular type of heating appliance is suitable to the needs of the claimant.
