Mr. James Callaghanasked the Secretary of State for Wales, in view of the agreement that has now been reached by the parties concerned, how soon his approval can be expected for the commencement of the Cardiff docks development scheme, including an urban development grant; and if he will give permission for sufficient capital allocation to the South Glamorgan county council to enable the building of the Butetown-Grangetown link road in order to complete the scheme.
§ Mr. Nicholas EdwardsI warmly welcome the progress which has been made by the local authorities and others in drawing up proposals for development in the Bute east dock area. I now await a detailed application for urban development grant, and I can assure the House that I will consider it and any other relevant matters promptly. The capital allocation made to South Glamorgan for 1984–85 allows for work to start on the Grangetown link and I shall be supporting the expenditure through transport supplementary grant.
