Mr. Michael Forsyth

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list for the five research councils the amount of their expenditure taken up by administration and central expenses in each of the past five years and the percentage of their total expenditure this represented.

The information is given in the table. The figures have been obtained from each research council's grant-in-aid accounts for the years in question.
