HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 cc31-2W
Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many places have been provided on the youth training programme in Northern Ireland for the year 1983–84.

Mr. Butler

On 25 November 1983, there were 11,872 places available in the youth training programme in Northern Ireland.

Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many places provided in the youth training programme in Northern Ireland in 1983–84 have not been taken up; and how the percentage take-up of places in Northern Ireland compares with the percentage in the United Kingdom as a whole.

Mr. Butler

On 25 November 1983, 3,901 (33 per cent.) of the available places were vacant. It should be noted that the total number of places available is always likely to be greater than the maximum number which in practice can be filled at any one time.

Comparable statistics for the United Kingdom are not available.

Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many places have been made available by each of the providers in the youth training programme in Northern Ireland for 1983–84; and what is the take-up rate in each of these schemes.

Mr. Butler

The number of full-time training places available and places occupied on 25 November was as follows:

Schemes Places available Places occupied per cent.
Attachment
Training Scheme 88 88 100
Employer Base Schemes 2,358 1,191 50
Employment
Rehabilitation Unit 20 8 40
Enterprise Ulster 397 100 25
Further Education Colleges 3,412 1,993 58

National Trust 87 25 29
Work Preparation Units 3,300 2,597 79
Young Help 412 324 79
Youth Community Projects 563 410 73

Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what are the total funds committed to the youth training programme in Northern Ireland for 1983–84; and whether, in light of the take-up percentage in the scheme, this has been adjusted.

Mr. Butler

£53 million has been allocated to the youth training programme in Northern Ireland during 1983–84. No adjustment to this allocation has yet been made.
