HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 c34W
Mr. Nellist

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland why he does not collect information on the numbers of 16 and 17-year-olds in Northern Ireland on Government training schemes.

Mr. Butler

The Department of Economic Development collects information each month on the number of young people in Northern Ireland on Government training schemes.

This count is currently undertaken manually and it would be both time-consuming and expensive to break the numbers down by age group and would provide little additional information that would be useful for the management of the various schemes.

At the end of November 1983 there were 11,000 young people undergoing training either in full-time training places or with employers.
