asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will estimate the cost of increasing single person's and wife's earned income allowances; to equal 30 per cent. of average male manual earnings, and of increasing married man's tax allowance to equal 63 per cent. of average male manual earnings.

The cost, at 1984–85 levels of income, is estimated to be about £9,400 million in a full year on top of the illustrative indexed levels for 1984–85 shown in the Autumn Statement 1983. The estimate assumes that age allowances would maintain the same lead in cash terms as in the final column of table 4.1 of the Autumn Statement.
