(3) what was the average annual return to the British economy on direct investment overseas (excluding oil companies) between 1974 and 1978 and 1979 and 1982.
§ Mr. Ian StewartTotal earnings in each year from 1972 to 1982 due to overseas residents on their direct investment in the United Kingdom (including that by oil companies) and on portfolio investment in the United Kingdom public and private sectors are published in table 5.1 of "United Kingdom balance of payments 1983 edition", which is available in the House of Commons Library. The same table also shows earnings due to United Kingdom residents on their direct investment overseas (excluding that by oil companies). All the earnings figures cover income only; portfolio investment earnings, in particular, exclude capital gains (which are included indistinguishably in the value of capital transactions, recorded in the capital account of the balance of payments).
