asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the latest figure for the number of old people over the age of 85 years in resident homes maintained by local authorities.

Mr. John Patten

On 31 March 1983, local authorities were supporting 46,317 people aged 85 and over in residential accommodation under the provisions of the National Assistance Act 1948.
