§ Mr. Ian StewartThe total annual value of investment overseas by the United Kingdom non-bank private sector in each year from 1978 to 1982 is given in table 11.4 of "Financial Statistics", the latest edition of which is available in the House of Commons Library. However, the 1978 figure shown in that table is not strictly comparable to those for later periods as it includes portfolio investment by banks for which separate data are not available. Figures for 1974 to 1977 on the same basis as that for 1978 are as follows, but 1974 includes, in addition and also indistinguishably, overseas direct investment by public corporations. The investments by banks and public corporations are thought to be relatively small.
