HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 c104W
Dr. Owen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the latest estimate for the cost of a marginal, as distinct from average, day in an acute hospital for a typical patient.

Mr. John Patten

Such estimated marginal costs are not calculated centrally.

Dr. Owen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the latest figure for the annual cost of tuberculosis treatment.

Mr. John Patten

Disease costing is not carried out routinely and information held centrally about patients treated by general medical practitioners and in hospital outpatient departments does not enable estimates to be prepared about the total cost of treating patients suffering from tuberculosis. It is estimated that the total cost of treating such hospital in-patients in England and Wales in 1980, the latest year for which diagnostic data are available, was about £17 million.

Dr. Owen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what is the latest estimate for the cost per case of treating ischaemic heart disease (a) in a coronary care unit and (b) at home:

(2) what are the latest estimates for (a) the cost of the test for detecting Down's syndrome and (b) the cost of detecting the presence of every foetus affected by Down's syndrome for mothers (i) under 30 years old and (ii) over 45 years old.

Mr. John Patten

No recent estimates of the cost Of these treatments are available.
