§ Mr. Weetchasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will undertake a study of the way in which falling rolls have affected the salaries and promotion prospects of teachers.
§ Mr. DunnThe relationship between pupil nurnbers, salaries and promotion prospects of teachers is a matter for the Burnham primary and secondary committee and will be best considered in the context of the salary structure review in which that committee is currently engaged.
§ Mr. Weetchasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will discuss with all interested parties with a view to the eventual publication of a Green Paper, the question of a written contract for teachers embracing all aspects of their work.
§ Mr. DunnA joint working party of the Burnham primary and secondary committee has under examination a number of inter-connecting issues—teachers' duties and responsibilities, assessment of professional performance and salary arrangements. My right hon. Friend has made it clear that he supports the broad proposals now being developed by the management panel. He hopes for a successful conclusion and has no plans for an alternative approach to these matters.
§ Mr. Weetchasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he has received a copy of "The Education of Teachers" from the National Council of Women of Great Britain containing conclusions relating to teacher supply and demand; and whether he intends to make a public response.
§ Mr. DunnMy right lion. Friend has received this report which will be carefully studied. He is pleased that the national council has expressed its support for many of the policies in the White Paper "Teaching Quality"
