HC Deb 29 February 1984 vol 55 cc174-5W
30. Mr. Nellist

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will initiate an inquiry into the conditions of African workers, particularly in relation to health and safety in the mining industry, employed by British firms in South Africa, and then issue a report containing guidelines for such United Kingdom companies with interests in South Africa.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

No. The conditions of black employees of British companies, including those in the mining sector, are covered by the guidelines in the European Community's code of conduct for companies with interests in South Africa, and nearly all the British companies concerned already submit annual reports. Copies of these are available in the Library.
