asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications were made for entry clearance as visitors from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan for each year since 1978; and how many such applications were refused.

The information requested is given in the following table. Visitors need not apply for entry clearance but may do so in order to ascertain in advance whether they are eligible for admission to the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom's annual financial contributions to Interpol's headquarters' costs for the years 1981, 1982 and 1983 were £211,516, £258,807 and £279,416, respectively. In addition, the costs of maintaining the national central bureau of Interpol at New Scotland Yard were £839,717 in 1981–82 and £908,850 in 1982–83. The financial figures for 1983–84 are not yet available, but the latest estimate is £998,000.

The Home Office is represented on the United Kingdom delegation which attends the Interpol annual general assembly where, among other things, the financial budgets and member countries' contributions to Interpol for the coming year are determined.
