HC Deb 29 February 1984 vol 55 cc205-6W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland, according to current projections, when lung cancer will overtake breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer deaths in women in Scotland.

Mr. John MacKay

Table C2.14 of the Registrar General for Scotland's annual report for 1982, a copy of which is in the Library, shows that the lung cancer mortality rates for women in the age groups 55 to 64 and 65 to 74, though not in other age groups, already exceed the corresponding figures for breast cancer. The mortality rates assumed for current population projections are not classified by cause of death.

Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if the trends in lung cancer mortality in Scottish women over the past 10 years show a significant increase.

Mr. John MacKay

The lung cancer mortality rate has risen from 263 per million women in 1972 to 447 per million women in 1982. Further information is contained in table C 1.6 of the annual report of the Registrar General for Scotland for 1982, a copy of which is in the Library.

Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many women died of cancer of the breast in each health board area and in Scotland in the latest five years for which information is available;

(2) how many women died from cancer of the lung in each health board area and in Scotland in the latest five years for which information is available.

Mr. John MacKay

The information is contained in the annual reports of the Registrar General for Scotland for 1978 to 1982, copies of which are in the Library. Figures
